What Rachel did in NYC
Wrote two articles. Met Rachel KB for Mexican food near Wall Street. Walked up to Bleecker Street for cupcakes, and tripped over on the street in the process (the cupcakes were good, though). Ventured into Bergdof Goodman and felt entirely out of place. Met Emily for a drink in Chelsea, followed by The Drowsy Chaperone, followed by yet more Mexican food. Bought an Anthropologie store. Went back...

Why do we always long for the things we don't...
Right now, I’m struck by a desire to live in a giant warehouse with a big group of friends, and host dinners, parties, make creative projects and stay up all night talking. (Which is probably because I just visited this blog for the house a bunch of my friends live in.) And, of course, our atomised society, in which as you grow older you spend your time with fewer and fewer people, means I...

One of my New Years Resolutions this year is to play more. Not because I think my life is particularly void of excitement and thrills, but because I’m conscious that a certain type of play - the kind that forces me to go out on a limb and potentially embarrass myself - terrifies me. My visit to the Hayward Gallery on Wednesday afternoon (ah, the joys of self-employment) had naught to do...

A lovely winter’s Sunday wandering around the colleges of Cambridge with Miss AB. This clock symbolises the passing of time, as the insect positioned at the top eats away at each second.

What Rachel did at the Freud museum
I spent tonight at the Freud Museum’s ‘Objects In Mind’ exhibition, which brings together Maggi Hambling’s magnificent self-portrait (above), with Freud’s own obsessive collecting habit (his study reveals masses of books, stones and statues), and meditations on the meanings objects have in ordinary people’s lives. A little out of the central London way, but...

What Rachel did at the Enchanted Palace
The ‘Enchanted Palace’ exhibition at Kensington Palace is a child’s fantasy brought to life. With a mix of art, interior design and interactivity, it offers a glimpse into the lives of the six princesses - and one feral child, kept as a “pet” - who lived there, and imbues an already history-laden building with a certain magic. And I say this as someone who...

Postcards from a post-climate change London
Simon and I checked out this exhibition at the Museum of London a few weeks ago, when we participated in Shoot Experience’s Goodbye London challenge (some excellent photos were taken, none were ours). Images via Lost at E Minor.
